Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has reacted to Christopher Nolan’s review of the sci-fi film, in particular addressing a comparison the Oppenheimer director made. The upcoming film adapts the second half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, which sees Paul Atreides become a key figure for the Fremen. Nolan reviewed the movie earlier this month, comparing it to the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Villeneuve reacted to Nolan comparing the upcoming Dune: Part Two with The Empire Strikes Back. The director said he was honored for the compliment, citing the Star Wars film as his favorite of the series. Check out what Villeneuve had to say below:
It’s a comparison that I would have never dared to do myself. I think it’s a beautiful compliment because Empire Strikes Back is by far my favourite Star Wars movie. So, it’s like, coming from Chris [Nolan], an incredible compliment.
Dune Is A Much Different Story Than Star Wars
Dune uses the messiah trope to subvert expectations.
There are some similarities between both the Dune and Star Wars franchises, despite the two of them ultimately being very different from one another. Both series focus on a young man – Luke Skywalker and Paul – whose destiny involves freeing people from the tyranny of a galactic empire. A desert planet is also featured prominently, with comparisons between Tatooine and Arrakis able to be drawn thanks to their basic geography.
However, Dune‘s chosen one story is very different from Star Wars, as Paul manipulates the prophecies planted among the Fremen by the Bene Gesserit to his advantage. His story is also focused on the freedom of one planet as opposed to the intergalactic adventures of Luke and his friends. With a darker tone and complex themes about prophecy, Dune is a much different story than that of the more familiar sci-fi franchise.
Since Dune: Part Two reviews are praising it for its sense of scale and visually impressive effects, the franchise is shaping up to carve out its own space in the sci-fi genre. While Star Wars comparisons are inevitable – and, based on Villeneuve’s reaction, sometimes justified – the series stands on its own as a very different science fiction story. Because of this, the new movie will prove to be a different type of film than those unfamiliar with the franchise may anticipate.
Dune: Part Two
arrives in theaters on March 1, 2024.
Villeneuve’s Dune Plans Can Match Star Wars’ Success
A spinoff TV series is also in the works.
While the franchise is very different from the galaxy far, far away, Villeneuve’s plans to expand the series could help it reach Star Wars‘ success levels. The prequel series Dune: Prophecy is expected to premiere on Max in late 2024, taking viewers back 10,000 years before Paul was born. If the show does well, it could open the door to even more expansions of the franchise across either film or TV.
Beyond the director’s plans, the franchise is already expanding into video games, with 2022’s Dune: Spice Wars strategy game, and the upcoming survival MMO Dune: Awakening. Much like the multimedia aspects of Star Wars, it seems the franchise is gearing up to have various mediums of success. Couple this with the preexisting book series, and Dune: Part Two might be what makes the franchise jump to never-before-seen heights.
