Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Superior Spider-Man #4
Spider-Man is one of Marvel Comics’ most dynamic heroes, and for good reason. With the proportional strength, speed, and agility of a spider, along with a genius-level intellect and the ability to stick to walls, there are few threats Peter Parker can’t handle. Still, the Webslinger is far from invulnerable – but thankfully, experience has given him a new defense against one of his most famous weaknesses.
The Superior Spider-Man #4 – by Dan Slott, Mark Bagley, John Dell, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Joe Caramagna – finds the one and only Doctor Octopus seeking to once again plant his mind inside the body of Peter Parker. Unfortunately for Octavius, Spider-Man has leveled up his psychic defense, pointing out that Otto was successful in the past due to Peter’s lack of psionic experience.
This time, Spider-Man resists Ock’s attack, assembling a psionic army of Marvel’s greatest heroes and unexpectedly weaponizing an alternate lifetime of memories. And though Ock circumvents some of these defenses, it’s clear that Spider-Man has upped his game.
Spider-Man Officially Gets His Own Doctor Octopus Arms in New Upgrade
Doctor Octopus’s old tentacles will give Spider-Man the upgrade he desperately needs to fight his classic foe’s new deadly weapon.
Peter Parker Won’t Lose His Mind Anytime Soon
Spider-Man is Marvel Comics’ premiere hero, and as such, he goes up against the worst threats that the House of Ideas has to offer.
Unlike other heroes with more experience in the psychic realm, Spider-Man has always been a more physical hero. Even when his battles require the strength of his mind, they tend to rely on his intellect, rather than putting him in a position requiring strong psionic prowess – but as it turns out, Peter identified his previous lack of psychic defenses and sought to compensate. This earlier vulnerability handed Ock his Superior Spider-Man gambit on a silver platter, allowing the villain to overpower Peter’s consciousness through the Webslinger’s lack of practical knowledge of the telepathic war.
Since regaining his body, Spider-Man has clearly been practicing mental defense techniques, understandably unwilling to find himself caught unawares once again. Although Doctor Octopus may have torn through many of Pete’s psychic defenses this go round, it’s also worth noting that Otto is a genius, one with a specific history and familarity with Spidey’s mindscape, giving him an edge against anything Parker might conjure. Even so, that experience isn’t enough to overcome the entirety of Spider-Man’s new defenses, including the ones that Peter himself didn’t even expect.
With Foes Like Doc Ock, Spider-Man Must Always Remain Vigilant
Spider-Man is Marvel Comics’ premiere hero, and as such, he goes up against the worst threats that the House of Ideas has to offer. With threats around every corner – and with more than a few of them outclassing Peter Parker in terms of psionic experience – it’s understandable that the Webhead would need a set of psychic shields just in case. Let it not be said that the Webslinger doesn’t learn from experience, because Peter Parker’s new psychic defenses undoubtedly make him Marvel Comics’ one true Superior Spider-Man.
