Massive Entertainment’s upcoming open-world game, Star Wars Outlaws will explore a different kind of Star Wars story in gaming that isn’t centered around Rebels, Jedi, or the Empire, but instead, someone who is simply trying to survive in the middle of the galactic conflict on the Outer Rim as they get drawn into dealings within the criminal underworld. The title was previously described as being the first open-world Star Wars game, suggesting that it will be even larger in scale than the hub-type explorable worlds of Respawn Entertainment’s acclaimed Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, as players can go between ground and space exploration somewhat seamlessly.
Star Wars Outlaws focuses on Kay Vess, a cunning scoundrel and thief, and her faithful Axolotl companion, Nix, as she seems to be on the run after crossing a major crime lord. From here, she is approached to attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen to amass enough of a fortune to buy her freedom, taking her on an adventure that spans multiple planets as she faces a variety of deadly threats and builds her reputation with some of the most well-known crime syndicates in the galaxy.

10 Ways Star Wars Outlaws Is Already Better Than Jedi: Survivor
Star Wars Outlaws doesn’t even have a release date yet, but some of its new features already make it look better than Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
What Characters Are In Star Wars Outlaws?
Many New And Legacy Characters Have Been Revealed
Many new and legacy characters have been revealed in Star Wars Outlaws‘ promotional material, with Kay and Nix being completely new additions to the franchise, while others such as Jabba the Hutt have been present since the original 1977 movie that started it all. Kay can be seen taking a job from Kaylen, a smuggler-type character that the game’s developers have insisted is not Kyle Katarn, despite bearing a striking resemblance to the protagonist of the popular Star Wars: Dark Forces and Star Wars: Jedi Knight games of the 90s, and from here she seems to assemble a team to help her, including a battle-hardened, trenchcoat-wearing BX Commando droid called ND-5.
The newest trailer revealed several of the crime syndicates that Kay will be involved with, and Sliro, a ruthless crime boss Kay has crossed paths with previously, who seems to have a bounty on her head. In the trailer’s opening moments, Sliro has assembled the Outer Rim’s main crime syndicates and mentions the Hutts and the Pykes – who had previously been confirmed to appear – and Crimson Dawn, one of the franchise’s more recent crime syndicates as an offshoot to Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective, who played a major part in the underworld at this time.
The character shown as Sliro mentions Crimson Dawn resembles Qi’ra, a character first introduced in
Solo: A Star Wars Story,
who was the face of Crimson Dawn during this time.

When Does Star Wars Outlaws Take Place?
Star Wars Outlaws Takes Place During A “Golden Age” For The Criminal Underworld
Star Wars Outlaws seems to be revisiting a very important period for the franchise that was first explored in the multimedia event, Shadows of the Empire, almost 30 years ago. These stories are set between the events of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, when the Empire was seemingly distracted by the growing rebellion, letting criminal organizations thrive, with this being described as a “golden age” for criminal organizations, in which they have the opportunity to make “millions“.
This period is further narrowed down by the appearance of Han Solo’s Carbonite form being transported across Tatooine in the reveal trailer, and being situated in Jabba’s palace – where it resides in the opening moments of Return of the Jedi – in the latest story footage, where Kay can be seen observing it shortly before meeting Jabba the Hutt. This suggests Crimson Dawn has already undertaken its attempt to steal Solo in the War of the Bounty Hunters comic arc as bait for a trap, and Boba Fett has reacquired him, indicating that the seeds are being sown for the Syndicate War shown in the comics.
During this time, Kay also seems to be taking advantage of the Empire being pre-occupied. Kay seems to be relatively new to the criminal underworld, with many characters pointing this out during their interactions, and a voiceover from Kay stating that she previously only did what she had to as a means to ensure her and Nix’s survival. Despite this, reputation seems to be a key factor in Star Wars Outlaws as Kay’s name seems to be becoming more well known as she takes on Jaylen’s job that is described only as a “death wish” in which she must rob Sliro of his fortune to buy her freedom.
With an August release date now confirmed for Star Wars Outlaws, players fortunately won’t have to wait too long to find out what Kay Vess’ journey has in store. With this period being left largely unexplored in gaming since Shadows of the Empire, Star Wars Outlaws certainly has an opportunity to tell a kind of story that hasn’t been shown in this medium in quite some time, hopefully making for a unique Star Wars experience.
