Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Invincible Iron Man #16! Tony Stark just debuted perhaps his most impressive Iron Man armor yet: the Sentinel Buster. Given how Stark’s company is technically responsible for creating the new line of Sentinels that are currently terrorizing all mutantkind, Tony decided that he was going to fight fire with fire. However, as powerful as this new suit has proven to be, it does have one hard limit – one that Iron Man admits himself.
In Invincible Iron Man #16 by Gerry Duggan and Creees Lee, Iron Man – sporting his gargantuan Sentinel Buster – has lured practically every Stark Sentinel to the Australian Outback to take them all out at once. At first, everything was going exactly as planned. The hordes of Sentinels were charging head-first into Iron Man’s Sentinel Buster, and he was crushing them like it was nothing. But as the attacks persisted, and the waves of Sentinels just didn’t stop, Iron Man revealed the one downside to his massive and powerful armor: the Sentinel Buster uses way too much energy.
Even before Feilong’s War Machine Sentinel joined the fight and effectively finished Iron Man off (indeed, the comic ends with Feilong claiming victory and Tony Stark lying unconscious in his Sentinel Buster), it was unclear if Iron Man was going to walk away from his solo battle against the world’s Sentinels. And the main reason wasn’t the unending hordes of the mutant-killing machines, it was the fact that Stark’s Sentinel Buster simply uses too much energy, and there was no way for him to recharge.
Marvel’s New Red Iron Man Is [SPOILER], NOT Tony Stark’s Son – Theory Explained
Avengers: Twilight has teased the introduction of a new ‘red Iron Man’ since the very start of the series, and we know who it is – theory explained.
Why Tony Stark Even Built the Sentinel Buster Armor (& Why It was Imperfect)
It’s unlike Tony Stark to charge into battle in a suit of armor with a weakness this obvious, especially given the mission he’s undertaking. Tony is a genius, so why would he challenge every Sentinel in the world – all by himself – with a suit that he knew was super energy-hungry? While many fans might consider this a poor depiction of Tony Stark’s character, it’s actually a perfect portrayal of who Tony is as a person. He only built the Sentinel Buster armor and used it so hastily – imperfections be damned – due to the extenuating circumstances surrounding this issue.
Tony Stark has partnered up with Emma Frost, and the two are working together to save mutantkind from the Stark Sentinels that Feilong (who effectively stole Tony’s company out from under him) unleashed upon the world in conjunction with the mutant-hating organization, Orchis. Every day those Sentinels – his Sentinels – were out there. Tony knew they were spreading nothing but suffering, and being the world-class hero that he is, Iron Man could not sit idly by while that suffering continued. Maybe it was reckless, but Tony has always played by his own rules, especially when it comes to being a hero.
Iron Man’s Sentinel Buster Proves Tony Stark Should Stop Going So Big
While the Sentinel Buster itself was necessary to physically crush the legions of Sentinels that littered the skies, the fact that the limit to how powerful Tony could make the suit was measured by the amount of energy it consumed proves that the same would be true for any of Iron Man’s massive suits. If the one hard limit on how powerful Iron Man’s armor can be is energy consumption, then Tony needs to stop making them so big. In fact, there’s another new suit that requires significantly less power, yet is infinitely more durable: Iron Man’s mysterium armor.
Iron Man’s mysterium armor is practically indestructible, and is more akin to his iconic suits of armor, as opposed to the Pacific Rim-esque Sentinel Buster. While suits like the mysterium armor are more practical and much safer in battle, sometimes giant robot problems require giant robot solutions. Though those situations do put a spotlight on the one hard limit on how powerful Iron Man’s suits of armor can become, and this one was no exception.
