Marvel has revealed that Peach Momoko will be debuting four new X-Men characters in Ultimate X-Men #4, as Armor’s superpowered universe continues to grow, shown in a gorgeous new cover and a set of exciting design sheets. Set in a Japanese high school, Ultimate X-Men is a fresh take on the iconic mutants of Marvel, and so far Hisako Ichiki is the only character from Earth-616 to appear in Momoko’s brand-new mutated world.
Ultimate X-Men #1 saw Armor discovering her powerful mutant ability for the first time as she is pursued by a malevolent, seemingly psychic supernatural entity, who is targeting Hisako because of her incredible abilities.
Marvel’s unveiling of Ultimate X-Men #4, written and illustrated by Peach Momoko and translated by Zach Davisson, not only introduces two mutants that Momoko created – Mori and Natsu – but will also see the debut of Academy X hero Surge and Runaways hero Nico Minoru into the Ultimate Universe.
Momoko Brings Surge And Nico Minoru To The Ultimate Universe
Alongside Armor on her journey to discover her mutant identity and escape the terrifying clutches of the disturbing entity is the electric Maystorm, a new character designed by Mei who has weather abilities and is inspired by the revolutionary Storm from Ultimate Black Panther. Now though, Momoko will be introducing her interpretations of Noriko Ashida, the Japanese mutant hero Surge, and Nico Minoru, the Japanese magical hero who uses the powerful “Staff of One.” The choice to include Surge, one of the X-Men’s most popular early 2000s additions makes a lot of sense, but Nico’s inclusion is much more fascinating.
On Earth-616 Minoru is not a mutant at all, she is a descendant of a magical family who steals her parents’ staff after finding out they are villains, using it with her teenage Runaways teammates to fight evil. It is unclear yet if Momoko will be retconning Nico into being a mutant, or if the blending of magic and mutation in Ultimate X-Men will see her magical bloodline coming into play. Momoko’s design sheets also include two new mutants, Mori and Natsu, whose origins have not been revealed. However, Natsu means “Summer” in Japanese, and one of the new mutants has one blindfolded eye and one red eye, hinting that Natsu could be a version of Cyclops, or Scott Summers.
Ultimate X-Men Is A Celebration Of Female Heroes
While the X-Men have “Men” in their moniker, some of the most iconic and beloved mutant heroes are women, like Jean Grey, Storm, Emma Frost, and Rogue. In many ways, the women of X-Men make the franchise what it is, and it seems like Momoko is leaning into this, as all the characters she has introduced in Ultimate X-Men are young women. Peach Momoko has said her Ultimate X-Men focuses on adolescence, the anxiety of change, and the struggles of growing up, and seeing a group of powerful teenage female high schoolers accepting their identities and fighting back against evil fits perfectly with those motifs.
Armor and Maystorm will need all the help they can get to fight against the horrifying creature that is stalking them, so hopefully Nico, Noriko, Mori, and Natsu will be heroic characters who can partner with the two main protagonists. Make sure to check out Ultimate X-Men #4 to see the debut of these awesome new characters, and check out Momoko’s design pages to see all the exciting details she reveals.
