Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan sits down for an interview with Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki and offers an incredibly positive review of the acclaimed 2023 kaiju movie. Nolan has earned acclaim for his filmography that spans various genres, from the historical dramas of Oppenheimer and Dunkirk to high-concept sci-fi features including Inception and Interstellar, to the grounded, realistic superhero with The Dark Knight trilogy. Yamazaki’s feature explored the emergence of Godzilla in the wake of World War II, as a traumatized and disgraced Japanese fighter pilot must fight his fears and shame as the kaiju approaches the country.
With both Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One achieving Oscar recognition during the 2024 Academy Awards, Yamazaki and Nolan sat down to interview one another for Oppenheimer’s Japanese distributor Bitters End.Inc’s YouTube channel.
During the interview, Nolan shares a glowing review of the 2023 movie, praising its production and striking a balance between the deeper human scale featured in Yamazaki’s previous movies with the spectacle expected from a Godzilla movie. Check out Nolan’s full review below:
I watched Godzilla Minus One and I thought it was a tremendous film. I though it was so exciting, I mean obviously it was beautifully made, the mechanics of it was so involving, it was so exciting. I felt it had a lot of the spirit of your earlier film, The Eternal Zero. It had a depth around the issues surrounding the main story, even though the main story is Godzilla, and he is an entertainment and an exciting one. There was wonderful depth to the characters and a wonderful sense of history history that I really appreciated.
Godzilla’s Cinematic Return Has Only Just Begun
Godzilla has become an unstoppable force across theaters, as after Yamazaki’s reimagining took audiences by surprise in 2023. The kaiju is set to lead a colossal team-up in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. After coming face to face with Kong in 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong, the two titans are set to join when a force from below the Earth’s surface threatens the balance of life on the surface in Adam Wingard’s sequel.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
releases in theaters on March 29th.
Yamazaki has indicated he isn’t finished with the kaiju just yet, teasing what he feels a sequel could explore. Following Godzilla Minus One‘s ending, Yamazaki hinted that while a sequel could bring more action and new kaiju, a more captivating prospect would be the chance to explore how humanity grapples with the long-lasting physical and mental scars brought on by Godzilla’s resurgence.
During 2024’s Oscar ceremony, audiences were left pleased by seeing both Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One receive the recognition they deserved. As such, Nolan’s highly positive praise of Godzilla’s return to cinematic dominance with its director himself may feel like a perfect conclusion to both the awards ceremony and the incredible response to Yamazaki’s feature. With Nolan praising Godzilla Minus One‘s carefully told tale of man and monster, it is clear that Yamazaki has succeeded in telling a story that resonates with audiences across the globe.
