Below Deck season 11’s Ben Willoughby has been promoted during the current charter season, but did he choose the right person to replace him as Lead Deckhand? While Ben has been a fixture on Below Deck in the last few seasons, his penchant for drama has made him a somewhat polarizing figure amongst fans. Ben, who first appeared on Below Deck season 10, has worked hard to improve his skills aboard the superyacht as he’s worked on the exterior team. With Captain Kerry Titheradge at the helm of the St. David in the current season, Ben was able to learn.
Although Ben has spent the majority of Below Deck season 11 working his way up to becoming a better boatsman, his time to shine came around early in the season as he worked more directly with the Captain. After he was promoted to Bosun, Ben had to prove himself quickly. He was able to work well with the Captain and the rest of the exterior team to be able to handle being down a team member during a charter, moving into a more favorable position in the St. David hierarchy. Now, with more responsibility, has Ben made the right call?

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
Ben Was Given The Opportunity To Become Bosun
He Was The Most Experienced When Jared Was Fired
Early in the charter season, the St. David welcomed a brand new Bosun to join the team. Captain Kerry felt good about hiring Jared Woodin, knowing he’d had experience on smaller vessels. He hoped the new Bosun would be able to handle the ins and outs of the superyacht, as he would be managing the rest of the exterior team and be the Captain’s direct point of contact about what was happening outside of the bridge. Ben had been promoted to Lead Deckhand before his time on Below Deck season 11 began, and Captain Kerry was happy to have him.
Unfortunately, Jared’s performance as Bosun quickly became lackluster with the first charter giving him massive problems. While Jared was able to get past the initial issues he faced on the St. David, he continued to make mistakes that made it clear he wasn’t ready to be in the Bosun position on such a large vessel. Mixed with some serious personal issues Jared was facing back home that kept his attention elsewhere, Captain Kerry ultimately was left with no choice but to let the Bosun go. He asked Ben, who he felt was capable, to take over as Bosun moving forward.
Ben Has Done Well Professionally Throughout The Charter
He’s Trying To Prove Himself To Captain Kerry
While Ben hasn’t worked as the Bosun of a vessel this large, he’s been able to acclimate quickly to the St. David. Taking over for Jared, Ben seamlessly blended into the exterior crew. He took the lead quickly, organizing and delegating tasks among the other Deckhands as they waited for someone else to join the crew. In charge of Marie “Sunny” Marquis and Kyle Stillie, Ben was able to tackle one of the most difficult charters of the season without any issues, impressing Captain Kerry with his skills. Though he still has things to learn, Ben has been doing well.
Ben Has Been In A Boatmance With Sunny All Season
Their Relationship Has Been A Roller Coaster
As things have been going well for Ben in his professional life, his personal life aboard the St. David has been interesting to watch pan out. While Ben was in a boatmance with Camille Lamb during Below Deck season 10, things went south quickly after the pair met back up after the charter season. During the early moments of Below Deck season 11, Ben swore he wouldn’t be caught in another boatmance on the series again. Unfortunately, he wasn’t ready for the charm of Sunny, his fellow Deckhand on the exterior team who quickly charmed him on a night out.
Throughout Below Deck season 11, Ben and Sunny have been developing a genuine connection. The pair have spent most of the crew nights out together, getting closer as the charter season has continued. Though they’ve had some difficult moments throughout the charter in Sunny wanting to define their relationship while Ben’s wanted to leave things more casual, they both have appeared to be interested enough in each other to make things a bit more serious. The pair have been working together, sleeping together, and spending free time together throughout Below Deck season 11, which has made Ben’s superior role difficult.
Ben Angered New Deckhand Dylan With His Choice
He Feels He’s More Qualified For The Lead Position
After Jared’s departure and Ben’s promotion, new Deckhand Dylan Pierre De Villiers came aboard the St. David to work with the exterior team. Though he’s only been on the charter for a short while, Dylan has years of experience in the yachting industry and has been able to pick things up quickly. While Dylan has been part of the St. David’s crew in some critical moments already, his time on the charter has spanned a short time, which is why it was surprising to hear that he was upset that Ben chose Sunny to be the crew’s next Lead Deckhand.
Ben, tasked with a genuinely difficult decision, decided to go with Sunny because he felt that she was the epitome of a Lead Deckhand. He explained that though he knew people would have difficulty with the decision due to the nature of their relationship, he wanted to go with Sunny over Dylan because of her role on the superyacht thus far. Dylan, unfortunately, felt that Sunny wasn’t as skilled as he was on the majority of the tasks they were required to do as exterior crew members. Unhappy, Dylan wasn’t sure how to express his feelings about Ben’s tough choice.
Did Ben Use Sound Judgement When He Chose Sunny?
He Did His Best To Think Professionally, Not Personally
While Dylan may have some issues with Ben’s choice of Lead Deckhand, Ben made the best choice based on seniority and responsibility. Throughout Below Deck season 11, Sunny has proven she’s a capable Deckhand and has explained that she wants to improve in her role whenever possible. Having taken on new responsibilities and developed new skills, Sunny has been able to become a key part of the exterior team during the charter season. Her fellow Deckhand Kyle even shared that he felt Ben made the right choice, as Sunny had been acting as Below Deck season 11’s Lead Deckhand already.
