How Much of the Manga Will Demon Slayer Season 4 Adapt?
Season 4 of Demon Slayer is set to begin by adapting the Hashira Training arc from the manga, the penultimate arc in the series, just before the final battle. However, what remains unclear is just how far the anime will be going this season. The Hashira Training arc covers only 9 chapters in the manga, and at a typical rate of 2 chapters per episode, that would only be about 4 to 5 episodes total. The season will likely be longer than that, but just what material will the rest of the season be comprised of?
It seems like an odd choice to adapt only part of the final battle, and then have a large gap before the final battle is completed in season 5, so fans have been wondering just where the cutoff will be. It’s possible that Demon Slayer may opt for a slower adaptation pace for the Hashira Training arc, covering only 1 chapter per episode and filling out the rest with anime-original content, although the premiere didn’t seem to indicate that. It’s also possible this may be a short season; there’s been no indication from official sources as to how long season 4 of the beloved anime will be.
Demon Slayer Season 4 Release Date, Story, Latest News, & Everything We Know So Far
A fourth season of Demon Slayer has been confirmed. Here’s everything that’s publicly known about the next season of the hit anime series.
If season 4 is to adapt the final arc, at least in part, one would expect that to play into the marketing of the series much more than it has; instead, the marketing has been focused specifically on the Hashira. That suggests that season 4 may have a very small episode count total, which could explain why it was able to come out relatively quickly after season 3. Still, there’s no way to know for sure what season 4 will entail until it actually begins airing.
Demon Slayer’s Hashira Training Arc is a Training Arc Done Right
In the manga, the Hashira Training arc plays a fairly important role in preparing for the final battle. While it’s not long, the arc is valuable for taking the time to get to know all the Hashira characters properly. While some, like Mitsuri and Tengen, have already featured heavily in previous arcs, others, like Sanemi Shinazugawa and Obanai Iguro, have only had a few lines of dialog, mostly deriding Nezuko, and largely remain mysteries to the anime viewing audience.
In particular, the arc reveals the backstories of Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka and Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima, giving fans a glimpse at their driving motivations. Sanemi is less explored, but still plays a large role, particularly in his relationship with his brother Genya. Even Hashira who’ve already gotten some focus are able to expand their characters more, like Shinobu Kocho. While it may be a little late, this characterization is incredibly important to the overall story.
Given how bloody the final arc of Demon Slayer gets, it’s important to have these characters fully established before the fighting breaks out. After all, audiences won’t care much if a character they’ve seen very little of is killed, but will be much more invested if the show spends several episodes getting to know them before killing them off. The progression of training with each Hashira individually allows them each to shine a bit, ensuring fans have a good grasp of their characters before the final battle ensues.
The Hashira Training arc overall is an effective shonen training arc, able to squeeze in a lot of growth for Tanjiro and the others without derailing the story too much. Without getting into spoilers, some other very important moments happen at the end of the arc which prompt the final confrontation, and might make for an effective cliffhanger to end the season on. That would still only cover 5-6 episodes at most, however.
Season 4 of Demon Slayer promises some excellent character moments for characters who’ve been a bit out of focus until now, making it a valuable addition to the series regardless of how far along in the manga it’s able to adapt. Whatever lies in store for fans in season 4, they don’t have much longer to wait. With the premiere of season 4 of Demon Slayer now confirmed to be just over a month away, hopefully the answers to these questions will soon be forthcoming.
