Summary
- Gunn’s Superman will likely correct DCEU mistakes, starting with a more comic-accurate Fortress of Solitude.
- The DCU movie hints at embracing traditional Superman lore with its Norway filming location, signaling a move towards a more faithful adaptation.
- Gunn promises a visually interesting Fortress of Solitude for Superman.
It was recently revealed where James Gunn’s Superman would begin filming, and the location makes it clear that the DCU is starting off by correcting a contentious point from the DCEU. DC’s previous attempt at a cinematic universe was often controversial with superhero fans for the ways it changed established DC lore. This could be as small as Superman missing his iconic red trunks, or more meaningful differences like Batman shooting and killing people in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Part of why the DCEU timeline felt off from the start is that it was retconned into existence as a sequel to Man of Steel, which was originally intended to be a standalone Superman franchise. This means Zack Snyder made Man of Steel his own interpretation of Superman and his backstory, without knowing it would end up having to be canon for an ongoing series. Controversial elements from Man of Steel, like Superman destroying a good chunk of Metropolis, were therefore stuck being part of the DCEU. Now, it looks like the DCU Superman movie will be correcting one of these unpopular choices.

DCU’s Fortress Of Solitude Can Avoid The DCEU’s Divisive Depiction
Following the successful Dark Knight Trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel set out to tell a slightly more grounded Superman story. In that effort, Snyder did his best to cut back on the overtly comic book-esque elements of Superman. One of the biggest changes was to Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, turning it from an ice fortress to just a crashed Kryptonian scout ship. The ship never served much purpose in Man of Steel besides delivering some exposition to Clark and giving him his suit, so it was neither functionally nor aesthetically similar to the original version.
The decision to leave out the conventional iteration of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude was arguably a mistake, as it took one of the most imposing and awe-inspiring landscapes from the hero’s lore, and gave it a conspicuous replacement that would inevitably lead to unfavorable comparisons. It seems as though James Gunn is already taking steps to avoid a similar mistake in the DCU though, as he has alluded to the existence of the Fortress of Solitude, and the recent Superman filming in Norway appears to suggest the DCU is investing in an authentic depiction of the icy location.
Gunn also seems less shy about including some of the more high-concept elements from DC Comics, as Superman will also include characters like Green Lantern and Metamorpho, hinting at a wider and more colorful universe than existed in Man of Steel. All of this sets up for the DCU movie to capitalize on an underutilized aspect of the hero’s history, and set up a hopeful precedent for the franchise’s future.
Why DCU’s Fortress Of Solitude Is Already Set Up To Be A Special Movie Depiction
Superman (2025)
- Release Date
- July 11, 2025
- Cast
- David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría
While commenting on the early scenes filmed for Superman, James Gunn revealed the Fortress of Solitude would indeed be an ice fortress. This naturally suggests that Gunn will be creating a much more comic-accurate version of the Fortress. This will help set the movie apart from the most recent depiction of Superman, and give audiences a more visually interesting locale that will perfectly set the stage for Gunn’s more comic-book-inspired universe.
Gunn also mentioned he chose Svalbard to film Superman due to its natural beauty, which likely means the Fortress of Solitude will be tucked away somewhere that is visually interesting, instead of simply standing on a flat sheet of ice. This would be a nice change, not only from the DCEU, but even over many of the comic books and other live-action depictions. No doubt Superman‘s version of the Fortress of Solitude will be as unique a take as Gunn’s other work in superhero movies.
