Summary
-
The Resident
has found streaming success on Netflix, despite being cancelled by Fox in 2023. - The show ranks as the week’s 8th most-watched English-language show in the United States.
- The show’s future is uncertain as Fox did not renew it for a 7th season, but its popularity on Netflix may lead to a possible resurrection.
The Resident has become a streaming hit on Netflix. The medical drama, which was created for Fox by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, takes place at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital and follows a hard-nosed resident who is disillusioned with the business of medicine, as well as the staff that surrounds him. The show went off the air in January 2023 after running for six seasons. Only three characters lasted the entire run of the show, namely the title character Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), the idealistic Devon Praveh (Manish Dayal), and Chief of Surgery Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood).
Netflix has now calculated their most-watched English-language shows in the United States for the week of March 18 through March 24. Although The Resident season 7 was never renewed at Fox, the medical show has become a success on the streamer, landing at No. 8 on the list. It is the only show that isn’t a Netflix original on the Top 10 list, which also includes hits such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, 3 Body Problem, and The Gentlemen.
Will The Resident Ever Come Back?
Netflix Success Could Help Resurrect The Medical Drama
It remains to be seen if this newfound streaming success will help the medical drama return to the airwaves. However, Netflix set a precedent for boosting acquired shows when the USA Network legal drama Suits, which ended in 2019, became a mega-hit on the streamer in 2023. This led NBC to develop a pilot for the spinoff Suits: L.A., which is set to star Arrow‘s Stephen Amell.
Between Netflix and Peacock,
Suits
was streamed for a whopping 57.7 million minutes in 2023.
Ultimately, the return of the show will depend on the network and the availability of the cast. Should The Resident flagship show come back, it would need to feature the return of the title star, even if other cast members with busy schedules don’t come back. Czuchry’s one credited role following the end of the show was appearing as Dexter Harding Jr. in American Horror Story: Delicate, which will be ending in April, so that could at least provide him with the perfect opportunity to reprise the role of Conrad Hawkins should producers move quickly.
The Resident: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Conrad Hawkins
For a series that follows a group of doctors going through their workdays, The Resident likely hasn’t given fans enough of Dr. Conrad Hawkins.
It will likely take more than landing in the Top 10 for The Resident to return in some way, shape, or form, however. If it can rise up the chart and hold its place in the Top 10 for more than one week, though, Fox or some other network may take notice. The show’s cancellation was so recent that if it was brought back, it would almost serve as an extra-long hiatus rather than an actual end to the long-running drama.
