The global release date for the Michael Jackson biopic, titled “Michael,” has been set for April 18, 2025. Lionsgate is the driving force behind the project, with Antoine Fuqua at the helm as the director. Taking on the role of Michael Jackson in this film about the singer’s life is Jaafar Jackson, his nephew. Universal Pictures holds the international rights for the biopic, excluding Japan.
Producing the film are Graham King, a seasoned professional in biopic filmmaking with the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” based on Queen’s story, along with John Branca and John McClain, who serve as co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. The script for “Michael” has been crafted by John Logan, known for his work on acclaimed films like “Gladiator” and “The Aviator.”
Lionsgate has announced that the upcoming film will delve into all aspects of Michael Jackson’s life. However, there is uncertainty surrounding how, or if, it will tackle the numerous controversies surrounding the late music icon. This uncertainty stems from the fact that the biopic is being developed in collaboration with Jackson’s estate, which has staunchly defended him against allegations of child sexual abuse, brought back into public awareness by the 2019 HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland.”
The film’s official synopsis states: “Michael aims to provide audiences with a compelling and truthful portrayal of the brilliant yet complex individual who ascended to the title of the King of Pop. The narrative unfolds on an epic, cinematic scale, showcasing both his human side with personal challenges and his undeniable creative genius through iconic performances. Viewers will gain an unprecedented insider perspective into the life of one of the world’s most influential and groundbreaking artists.”
It is noteworthy that the Minecraft film, another significant studio production slated for April 2025 by Warner Bros., will feature Jason Momoa and Jack Black in lead roles.
