Beetlejuice 2
without revealing too much. - The sequel wisely keeps Ortega’s character under wraps, hinting at a significant role in Beetlejuice’s return.
Jenna Ortega made her debut as Astrid Deetz in the first official look at Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2, but her presence in the teases so far has been surprising. After the original movie grew into a monstrous hit in the years following its 1988 release, production on a direct sequel ramped up in 2022 following decades of rumors. Aside from the returns of Beetlejuice‘s Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, previous Burton collaborator Jenna Ortega was confirmed for Beetlejuice 2. Her involvement pushed the anticipation for the sequel to a new level, considering her evergrowing popularity as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
Before Ortega was confirmed as a newcomer for Beetlejuice 2, she had worked with Burton on Netflix’s Wednesday, where she portrayed the titular Addams Family character. With the success of the supernatural coming-of-age show and Ortega’s standout performance, bringing in a young actor with star power was a no-brainer. It also helps that Ortega’s past roles in horror and comedy perfectly align with the genres and tone that Burton has mastered. Granted, even the excitement surrounding Ortega’s character in Beetlejuice 2 hasn’t been used as a major selling point for the movie, at least not yet.
Beetlejuice 2’s Trailer Barely Showing Jenna Ortega Is A Smart Move By The Sequel
Astrid’s Presence In Beetlejuice 2’s First Trailer Was Limited
Before Beetlejuice 2‘s first trailer released, a few images were made public, showing off characters, including Michael Keaton’s return as Beetlejuice. One particular image revealed a group shot of Delia (O’Hara), Lydia (Ryder), Astrid (Ortega), and another new Beetlejuice 2 character played by Justin Theroux. It certainly wasn’t surprising to see Astrid in one of the first-look images, but it was a bit of a shock that Beetlejuice 2‘s trailer barely showed Ortega. That said, limiting Ortega’s presence in promotional materials leading up to Beetlejuice 2 is a genius move.
Rather than utilize Ortega in a way that primarily highlights Astrid, the
Beetlejuice 2
trailer gave a little tease, leaving viewers wanting more from the character.
Warner Bros. and Tim Burton are undoubtedly very aware of how many viewers will be interested in Beetlejuice 2 due to Jenna Ortega’s involvement alone. Evidence suggests that her increased popularity following Wednesday’s debut helped make Scream 6 the biggest box office performer within the slasher franchise’s history. Rather than utilize Ortega in a way that primarily highlights Astrid, the Beetlejuice 2 trailer gave a little tease, leaving viewers wanting to learn more about the character.
Jenna Ortega Will Still Play A Key Role In Beetlejuice 2
Astrid Will Certainly Have A Key Role In Beetlejuice’s Return From The Afterlife
Just because Ortega has a limited presence in the trailer, there’s no reason to believe that Astrid will have a small role in Beetlejuice 2. The footage begins with the teenager riding a bike through Winter River, serving as a callback to her mother, Lydia. Though she has no dialogue or direct character interactions, Astrid surely has a pivotal role in the highly-anticipated Beetlejuice sequel. At one point, Ortega’s character takes a sheet off of Adam Maitland’s town model in the attic shortly before Lydia discovers Beetlejuice has been summoned back to the real world.
8 Original Characters Still Missing From Beetlejuice 2
In addition to Beetlejuice, Lydia, and Delia, there are some great missing original characters who still must return for Beetlejuice 2.
The circumstances surrounding Beetlejuice’s return after 36 years remain a mystery, but it’s safe to say Astrid will be directly involved in some way. Either she is the one who ends up bringing him back, or she will have no choice but to deal with the chaotic bio-exorcist just like her mom had to do decades prior. Speaking of, Astrid and Lydia’s mother-daughter relationship will also be an interesting topic for Beetlejuice 2 to explore, particularly how the movie develops Astrid’s persona in contrast to Lydia’s iconic macabre vibe in 1988.

Beetlejuice 2 Shouldn’t Reveal Too Much In The Trailers
Beetlejuice 2 Can’t Risk Giving Too Much Away Before The Movie’s Release
Leading into the trailer, not too much was revealed regarding Beetlejuice 2‘s story. However, there were plenty of questions about the next chapter of Burton’s story, some of which were answered immediately. The trailer confirmed the death of Beetlejuice‘s Charles Deetz and the reunion between Beetlejuice and Lydia, which was long in the making. Still, any future Beetlejuice 2 trailers should avoid giving too much away, especially regarding Ortega’s character.
In an age when movie trailers tend to reveal too much,
Beetlejuice 2
should embrace the allure of the “less is more” approach when it comes to major reveals.
There’s no question that Beetlejuice 2 will embrace nostalgia to cater to longtime fans of the original movie. Even if that’s the case, there’s still a ton of information that should be left up to the imagination leading up to the movie’s September release. In an age when movie trailers tend to reveal too much, Beetlejuice 2 should embrace the allure of the “less is more” approach when it comes to major reveals. Teases and brief looks are understandable for building up the hype of a movie, but Beetlejuice 2 won’t need much convincing, thanks to Burton and the notable cast members.
