The Blade Runner movies may be named for the futuristic profession of hunting down replicants, but it’s not immediately clear which of the few Blade Runners featured is the most skilled. The world of Blade Runner, inspired by the novel by Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is rich and full of incredible details that reveal a dystopian future. Walking and working among the people of the future, a race of highly advanced androids, known as replicants, are an integral part of society. But as the technology rapidly develops, old, obsolete, and malfunctioning replicants must be decommissioned.
That’s where the highly skilled Blade Runners come in. Special agents are trained to identify and overpower replicants, despite their remarkable similarities to humans, which can often make them appear indistinguishable apart from their increased strength, durability, and artificial memories. When comparing the skills of each Blade Runner who appears in the shows and movies, it’s important to identify what skills they display, whether it’s intelligence, strength, powers of deduction, or how lethal they are. Each Blade Runner has specific skills and talents, but they are not all equal, and few have proven their mastery as a Blade Runner.
6 Gaff
Blade Runner (1982)
Blade Runner
The original Blade Runner is a sci-fi neo-noir film set in 2019 in a dystopian cyber-punk society. Harrison Ford stars as Rick Deckard as a Blade Runner for the LAPD, tasked with hunting rogue replicants, genetically engineered humans designed to tackle tasks that human beings cannot. When four replicants go rogue and begin killing humans, Deckard is forced out of retirement to hunt them down and stop them – but the truth isn’t as simple as it seems. Deckard will have to reckon with the philosophical dilemma of what makes someone human.

Gaff was an inexperienced member of the Blade Runner unit, with little expertise at fighting against the replicants when a colleague, Dave Holden, was injured. Due to his lack of experience, his commanding officer, Harry Bryant, insisted that he go and convince a retired agent, Rick Deckard, to help with the mission to track down and retire the rogue replicants. Gaff didn’t see a lot of action facing off against the replicants, which means it’s hard to gauge his talents, but presumably, he went on to become a more active part of the department, as is shown in spin-off games.
5 Dave Holden
Blade Runner (1982)
In Blade Runner, little is revealed about Dave Holden, aside from his status as a top Blade Runner in the LAPD before he had an incident with a Nexus-6 who severely injured him. Both the novel and the games suggest he goes on to recover, but as far as the movie is concerned, his fate is uncertain. While Holden may have been successful in retiring older models of the Nexus androids, he met his match with the Nexus-6. Holden failed to react in time to prevent major injuries, and so, he comes in at the bottom of the rankings.
8 Most Important Blade Runner Stories The Movies Didn’t Show You
The Blade Runner universe goes far beyond the Rick Deckard movies. Several other projects expand the franchise and bridge the gaps between the films.
4 Rick Deckard
Blade Runner, & Blade Runner 2049
Rick Deckard is one of the most legendary members of the Blade Runner unit, and certainly has a great talent for identifying, tracking, and retiring replicants. In the first movie, Deckard has already retired from working as a Blade Runner due to tragic losses in his personal life, and an incident where he killed a Nexus-3 that left him feeling uncomfortable due to how human they appeared. However, Deckard has an innate gift for recognizing replicants, as seen when he conducts the Voight-Kampff test on Rachael. Deckard was able to identify her as a replicant despite her not knowing herself.
As well as detecting replicants despite them being convinced of their own humanity, Deckard was also a formidable Blade Runner. He was able to retire a small group of Nexus-6 replicants that proved too challenging for his peers at the LAPD. And, Deckard was able to fight these replicants off despite having been on a break from serving, with exceptional skill and precision. However, after these events, Deckard also falls in love with Rachael the replicant, and leaves the area with her to pursue a new life away from the Blade Runner unit and their magnetic pull on his life.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Blade Runner 2049

The film follows LAPD replicant officer K, who discovers a devastating secret that could throw society into total chaos. To stop a potential war between replicants and humans, he’ll need to locate missing former blade runner Rick Deckard and uncover the truth.

K is the only replicant who was also employed as a Blade Runner in the on-screen adaptations of Philip K. Dick’s story. K is a Nexus-9 replicant, who possesses superior strength, speed, and intellect. In addition, he was also given memories, which makes him unique from other replicants. K is an incredible detective, capable of putting minor clues together and solving cases and mysteries that others struggle to unravel. In Blade Runner 2049, K can be seen fighting off much larger replicants, and piecing together clues to determine the truth with relative ease.
K may be an android, but he is also one of the most effective and intelligent Blade Runners to ever work in the LAPD. While trying to uncover the truth about a child born to a replicant woman, K struggles to reconcile memories he has, with the evidence he discovers, leading him to momentarily believe that he could be the child of the replicant. However, despite the memories feeling real and resembling the evidence, he also has a clear enough mind to be able to recognize when the evidence stops pointing at him and starts pointing elsewhere.
8 Blade Runner Clues That Prove Deckard Was Always A Replicant
Deckard was always a replicant in Blade Runner, and the film hinted at his true identity long before Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott confirmed it.
2 Joseph
Blade Runner: Black Lotus (2021 – 2022)
Joseph served as a Blade Runner in the LAPD until 2032, as a faithful and incredibly talented member of the team. Throughout his assignments, Joseph managed to retire anywhere between 100 or 200 replicants, many of which were the latest models of replicants. It is clear that Joseph had a great talent for eliminating replicants, which made him a legend among his peers. However, when he eventually fell for a replicant singer named Selene, it was clear that his heart was no longer in the job, and he chose to step away from his role as a Blade Runner.
1 Brook Marlowe
Blade Runner: Black Lotus (2021 – 2022)
Brook Marlowe may not have record kills, as Joseph did, but he is fiercely loyal to the LAPD and his mission. Marlowe is the person who steps in when other Blade Runners become soft or lose sight of their missions. Marlowe tracked down and hunted many replicants in order to fulfill his duty as a Blade Runner, but he also had to track and pursue other Blade Runners when they crossed lines and developed relationships with replicants. He may not have been a nice guy, but he was the most skilled and committed agent in the Blade Runner franchise.
