Warning: spoilers for The Witcher books and potential spoilers for season 4.
Summary
- Leo Bonhart & Stefan Skellen are new villains for Ciri’s story, adding depth and threat.
- The Witcher series lacked consistent villains, but these characters can fix that.
- Bonhart & Skellen will push Ciri’s character development in a positive direction.
The Witcher season 4 has added three more characters, of which two are bad news for Ciri, but it’s for the benefit of her story. Netflix’s The Witcher is moving on with a fourth season after Henry Cavill’s departure. After playing Geralt of Rivia for three seasons, Cavill left The Witcher, and Liam Hemsworth was cast to continue Geralt’s story from season 4 onward. The Witcher season 3’s ending saw Ciri being rescued by the Rats, Yennefer starting the Lodge of Sorceresses, and Geralt embarking on a rescue mission to find Ciri with Jaskier and Milva.
The Witcher season 4, then, is expected to cover some of the most exciting but also controversial storylines from the books, particularly those involving Ciri. With Ciri now with the Rats, the White Flame presenting a fake Ciri, and Geralt not knowing where Ciri is, the Princess of Cintra is more vulnerable than ever. Ciri is about to face bigger problems thanks to two new additions to the cast of The Witcher season 4, but they will also be key to improving her story after three not-so-good seasons.
1 New The Witcher Season 4 Character Will Make Ciri’s Story So Good, You’ll Forgive All The Mistakes
One character rumored to appear in The Witcher season 4 will set up Ciri’s best story to date, making up for the show’s past mistakes.
The Witcher Season 4 Will Introduce Leo Bonhart & Stefan Skellen
Leo Bonhart & Stefan Skellen Are Big Villains In Ciri’s Story
Leo Bonhart is one of the most ruthless villains in
The Witcher
novels, and he caused a lot of trouble and pain for Ciri.
Three new characters have been added to the cast of The Witcher season 4: dwarf Zoltan (Danny Woodburn), bounty hunter Leo Bonhart (Sharlto Copley), and spy Stefan Skellen (James Purefoy). Leo Bonhart is one of the most ruthless villains in The Witcher novels, and he caused a lot of trouble and pain for Ciri. Bonhart is a bounty hunter, who found pleasure in witnessing brutal events and inflicting pain on others. Bonhart carried three witcher medallions from the School of the Wolf (the one Geralt attended), the School of the Cat, and the School of the Griffin, claiming to have killed the witchers who wore them.
Emhyr tasked Skellen to find, capture, and bring Ciri and Cahir to him.
Stefan Skellen, known as Tawny Owl, was a Nilfgaardian coroner and member of the Imperial Secret Service, meaning he was a spy for Emhyr van Emreis a.k.a. the White Flame (and Ciri’s father). As such, and after Cahir failed to bring Ciri to Nilfgaard, Emhyr tasked Skellen to find, capture, and bring Ciri and Cahir to him. Skellen formed a group of mercenaries and hired Leo Bonhart to help him find her. Skellen, however, had other plans, as he wanted to use his newly formed crew to kill Ciri and overthrow the White Flame.
What Skellen wasn’t counting on was Bonhart also having his own plans. Bonhart was also hired by Baron of Casadei to capture Ciri and bring her to him alive, and when he found her and killed the Rats, he didn’t kill her as Skellen told him to, nor did he bring her to Baron of Casadei. Instead, Bonhart imprisoned Ciri, beat her, and drugged her, and later forced her to fight in the arena at Claremont, where he learned she had been trained as a witcher. After Ciri’s escape, Bonhart, Skellen, and Rience hunted her down at Vilgefortz’s order.
Leo Bonhart & Stefan Skellen Can Fix The Witcher’s Villain Problem
In Just Three Seasons, The Witcher Developed A Villain Problem
Although The Witcher has introduced antagonistic and evil characters, it hasn’t had a consistent villain yet. A world as rich as The Witcher has proven to be a challenge to adapt into a TV series, with the characters outside the main three (Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer) often ending up being underdeveloped and, in some cases, not lasting long. Unfortunately, this has been the case for the series’ villains so far. The Witcher season 1 established Cahir as a villain as he went after Ciri following the fall of Cintra, but Cahir ended up redeeming himself in season 2 and even apologized to Ciri in season 3.
Although Vilgefortz was introduced in season 1, it wasn’t until season 3 that his true intentions were revealed.
The Witcher season 2 introduced Rience, a fire mage who went to extremes to get what he wanted. Rience had a small role in season 2 and returned in season 3, only to be a slow-burn type of villain who was killed in the most anticlimactic way possible. Although Vilgefortz was introduced in season 1, it wasn’t until season 3 that his true intentions were revealed, thus becoming one of the series’ biggest villains. As for the White Flame, The Witcher has been holding back with his plans and more, but in the end, Emhyr is not as big of a villain as initially believed.
Leo Bonhart and Stefan Skellen can fix this as they are some of the biggest threats Ciri encounters following the Thanedd Coup. Bonhart and Skellen are also threats to Geralt, especially the former, who has killed witchers before, and neither is scared of the White Flame and his power. Although Bonhart and Skellen’s time in The Witcher is brief, the series can flesh them out more and make them the real villains.
How Leo Bonhart & Stefan Skellen Will Improve Ciri’s Story In Netflix’s The Witcher
Bonhart & Skellen Are Key Parts In Ciri’s Upcoming Stories
Ciri is now on her way to becoming the main character of
The Witcher
.
Netflix’s The Witcher has been criticized for the changes it has made to the characters and their stories, especially in season 2. Season 3 did what it could to make up for the past season’s mistakes, but season 4 still has a lot to fix. After the events of season 3, Ciri is now on her way to becoming the main character of The Witcher, and Bonhart and Skellen will be key in her character development. Ciri is about to go through some important changes now that she’s part of the Rats, and Bonhart and Skellen will further push her to become tougher.
The Witcher
Based on the novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and the video games, The Witcher follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter who struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. “Ciri” Cirilla is the Princess of Cintra, who has magical abilities and whose fate has been linked to Geralt’s. Yennefer of Vengerberg, a sorceress who trains to become a mage before deserting her duties and going solo, is also a main character in the Netflix series. The show’s storylines are intertwined but told throughout different timelines, all of which eventually catch up to Ciri’s, whose timeline of events is the most recent. Set on the Continent where men, monsters, and elves exist together, the characters all have separate journeys, though their destinies bring them into each others’ orbits.
